How we operate

Magnetic Island Roaming operates with a focus on reducing the environmental impact of visitor transport.  Our fleet consists of electric vehicles, with no petrol or diesel used for our hire vehicles.  Our business also operates with 100% renewable energy powered by solar power system and battery storage, helping to supply far more electricity from renewable energy back to the grid than used to operate.  We monitor our energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and use emissions calculation tools to understand and improve our environmental performance.  We are committed to continual improvement and regularly look for practical ways to reduce energy use, waste, emissions and other environmental impacts.  We aim to operate in a sustainable way.  

Magnetic Island, known as Yunbenun, is part of the traditional Country of the Wulgurukaba people.  We acknowledge the continuing connection of Traditional Custodians to Country and encourage visitors to learn about the cultural significance of the island and to treat Country with respect.

• Bikes do less damage to road surfaces than cars. Bike paths give people ‘freeways’ for the price of footpaths.
• More people riding and walking provides additional opportunity for social interaction on the streets which can greatly enhance a sense of community and connection, improving mental wellbeing.
• Bicycle riding uses minimal fossil fuels and is a pollution-free mode of transport.
• Bikes reduce the need to build, service and dispose of cars.
• Bicycle riding conserves roadway and residential space, thereby providing opportunities for less concrete and more plant life in urban areas.

• The Queensland Government says replacing car trips with an e-bike can help reduce:

  • Fuel costs
  • Traffic congestion
  • Emissions
  • Parking pressures

Queensland also has a Queensland Cycling Strategy 2017-2027 (re-released 2023)  We hope that better cycle friendly infrastructure can be extended to small communities like Magnetic Island.

Our Location

Our business is located on a tropical island but for us it’s the busiest part of town!   We have created a small corridor for birds, insects, butterflies and the occasional visiting wallaby.  Vines provide specific habitat for butterly species so you can see the caterpillars eating away at the right time of year.  Minimal water usage runs off onto the native garden and bananas lining the business driveway.  While pickup up your bike you might find a butterfly or sunbird passing by.

We have a high focus on safety and ensure that all of our riders are properly licensed, have relevant experience and have chose the right activity for them to experience their day.  Although in Queensland you can legally ride a moped on a car licence we only hire to those with a Mortobike or Moped Drivers Licence as they have experience using a throttle and driving 50km/h on the road with other traffic. 

For others who are experienced bicycle riders we have our pedal assist bicycles which are available to riders 16+ with adult supervision and 18+ with a drivers licence.  Note that even though the pedal assist bicycle does not have a throttle this is still the law in QLD and helps riders to know and understand the road rules.

Not all parts of Magnetic Island have dedicated pathways.  It’s a tropical island, locals ride bikes along with our lovely tourists who have come to experience paradise.

We started this business with providing a fun way to explore and zero emissions front of mind running on full solar power charging, supporting, no fuel or grid electricity required.  We thoughtfully chose Sustainability | UBCO Australia and started our fun fleet of New Zealand designed utility road registered electric motorbikes.  Everyone had such fun that we added our now very popular RemiDemi pedal assist bicycles.  It is good to be a part of a small business community as members of  Tourism Magnetic Island and bring renewable energy transport choice to Magnetic Island.

We want visitors to enjoy Magnetic Island while helping protect the natural environment.  Small actions by visitors can make a significant difference to the places they enjoy.  Magnetic Island is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including koalas, wallabies, birds, reptiles and marine life.  Wildlife should always be observed responsibly.

We encourage our guests to support local Magnetic Island businesses, including cafes, restaurants, accommodation providers, tour operators, shops and other locally owned businesses.  We are members of Tourism Magnetic Island and are happy to refer you to many of the well run island businesses.
